Who is Joshua?

Joshua is:

  • a storyteller.
  • a leader and member of Grace and Main Fellowship, an intentional Christian community committed to hospitality, simplicity, prayer, nonviolence, and grassroots community development.
  • the executive director of Third Chance Ministries, which supports the work of Grace and Main Fellowship (and other communities) by cultivating Christian communities and leaders on the margins of society through hospitality, power sharing, and discipleship.
  • the author of Telling the Stories that Matter, a collection of daily stories of “saints and should-be-saints” that give us clear pictures of what it means to be a follower of Jesus and how others have worked for the Kingdom of God.
  • a speaker, available for retreats, youth events, storytelling, and other events and opportunities that align with the ministry of Third Chance Ministries, Grace and Main Fellowship, and Telling the Stories that Matter.
  • an author of Grace and Main’s prayerbook: A Pattern of Prayer
  • a writer, whose work can be found at Red Letter Christians, in Smyth & Helwys publications, Formations and Reflectionsaccompanying Jennifer Kennedy Dean’s book, Life Unhindered, at FaithLab, and elsewhere.
  • an adjunct professor of religion and philosophy at Averett University
  • a doctoral candidate in community development at Mercer University’s McAfee School of Theology
  • a native of Eastern Kentucky and a proud Appalachian.
  • a husband to Jessica (Forge) Hearne.
  • a father to Lucy.
  • commissioned, along with his wife, as Global Mission Field Personnel by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
  • an alumnus of Georgetown College, in Georgetown, Kentucky.
  • an alumnus of Duke University Divinity School, in Durham, North Carolina.
  • a spiritual director for people experiencing homelessness, hunger, poverty, addiction, and anybody else who wants to explore how God might be leading them over coffee, tea, or a good book.
  • an exceptionally (frighteningly?) avid fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
  • a lover of good books, especially epic fantasy and experience-based non-fiction.
  • a cat owner (Pangur Ban), who dreams about one day also having a dog.

One response to “Who is Joshua?

  1. Our Dee Dee Wester Sunday School class is reading your August “Formations” lessons beginning tomorrow. Our church, the First Baptist Church of Henderson, N. C., recruits Duke Divinity students every year. They always bring us scholarship and living messages that enrich all of us and specifically our youth. From what I have seen of your ministry I am sorry we did not have an opportunity to engage you. We wish you well.
